Blood cell partitioning represents the extent of accumulation of a drug in red blood cells. The percentage of partitioning is calculated based on the blood and plasma concentrations and hematocrit. Analysis is performed using LC/MS/MS. 

Blood cell partitioning studies can be conducted with both non-labeled and radiolabeled compounds. These investigations provide an indication of amount of test material associated with the cellular component of the blood and can help inform critical decisions like safety margin or potential therapeutic dose levels.

Blood cell partitioning has a similar relevance to plasma protein binding.
