Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme responsible for hydrolyzing organic phosphate esters to breakdown proteins in the body. Raised levels of ALP could indicate the presence of liver disease, gallbladder disease or even a bone disorder, as damaged cells will release excess ALP into the bloodstream. 

To determine the tissue source of the elevated ALP in serum, electrophoresis is used to separate the isoenzymes which are then visualized using a chromogenic substrate.
